When I was in Paris earlier this year, one of the major highlights was the Louvre. (which I highly recommend seeing if you ever get the opportunity)
Among the most important attractions there, is the famous painting inspiring this thread. It's a nice painting to be sure, but there is nothing about it that is particularly noteworthy beyond the fact that it's one of the few works there of that period that's not overtly religious. Scene after scene of the either "the crucifixion" or the "assumption of the virgin" starts to get a little tired after the first few hundred.
Nonetheless, as far the Mona Lisa goes, I really think it's a case of self fulfilling fame rather than the painting itself.
