I can only manage a top 5, because any more than that and I'll pull my hair out from all the potential prospects to consider. I had originally started this post last night but chose to sleep on it, since I have such a bad habit of over thinking things. Here's my top 5 favorite albums, ever. 1. Hopesfall - Satellite Years Genre: Post-Hardcore/Progressive/Metalcore This album is honestly the one of the few albums I can listen to on repeat and still be blown away each time through. In terms of musicianship this album has everything I look for; atmosphere, complexity, melody, compassion, ambiance, aggression, self-awareness, the lot. It’s one of the few works that I can not find a single fault with, even with the production. The guitars are loud and abrasive yet refined enough to clearly convey every note without being a convoluted mess. The drums are not only well done sonically, but Adam Morgan (the drummer) is easily one of the most compelling drummers I’ve ever come across. It’s the subtleties with him, he’s the not the fastest nor is he the most complex but his beats are inventive and drive each song masterfully. Tracks I recommend listening to: The Bending, Waitress, Dead in Magazines2. Aesop Rock - Float Genre: Hip hop Easily one of the most talented word-smiths to grace the hip hop genre. This album in particular resonates with me most because of it’s portrayal of every day people and the society we live in; it touches on religion, politics, ethics, existential views, personal tragedy and other introspective themes. The production is pretty gloomy, which as a whole suits the content perfectly. Aesop’s lyrics are so indirect and cryptic that it’s not too surprising when a second (third, fourth, and fifth) listen to the same song will give you a different interpretation. I think what impresses me most about his music is that he’s more of a story teller than a lyricist. He strings together such inventive (I know, I’ve used that word already) rhyme schemes and uses the most elaborate of word choice doing it. Tracks I recommend listen to: Big Bang, Spare a Match, How to be a Carpenter 3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Genre: Psychedelic/Rock I feel like this is almost obligatory. If you’re going to take yourself seriously as a person who enjoys any form of music, you need to recognize the greatness of this album and what it’s done for music as a whole. Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to put it in your top ten favorites, it doesn’t mean you even have to like the band. Merely that you respect it, and give credit where it’s due. This album single-handedly taught me how to appreciate music. The themes, the samples, the musicianship, the ambiance, every thing about this album is perfection. Songs I recommend (if you live under a rock and haven’t heard them already): Time, The Great Gig in the Sky, Money, and Us and Them4. Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone Genre: Post-Rock/Ambient There’s a certain sorrowfulness that envelops this album, I’m not really sure how else to explain it. I suppose the band themselves got that impression as well, hence the title of the album. In terms of musicianship you’re not going to find a better blend of soaring melodies and pensive interludes. The reason I take this album over their other works is because this is the album that gives me the most imagery, it tells a story without having any words. When I want to get away from reality, this is the album I listen to. Songs I recommend: The Birth and Death of the Day and What Do You Go Home To?
5. Sugar Ray - 14:59 Genre: Rock/Pop You'd be hard pressed to find an album that's more musically diverse than this. Each song takes a different approach and sounds nothing like the last, almost an anomaly in today's music scene. Pop, Acoustic, Rock, Pop Punk, Metal, Classic Rock, and even some scratch beats from a turn table; it's all there. What I like most about this album is the apparent dualistic nature of the band. It's easy to recognize the light-hearted approach they have to each song, but at the same time it's blatantly obvious these guys have the self-awareness to make music with such a multi-faceted core. They make every song memorable with catchy hooks and distinctive verses, and because of the vast song writing on this album each song could easily stand on its own as a potential single. Well, except the first and last tracks... but those aren't technically songs. Songs I recommend listening to: Someday, Personal Space Invader, and GloryIt's worth mentioning that the songs I listed aren't necessarily the most popular or forthright of each band/artist. The songs I chose are the ones which best represented a different dynamic of the band and their overall sound. A simple youtube search of the band's name will prioritize their most popular songs for you, if the ones I have provided aren't enough for you.

I'm challenging myself to only pick one album per band, though in reality, about 7 of the spots would be taken up by 3 of the bands.
1. Brand New- The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me 2. La Dispute- Wildlife 3. The Chariot- One Wing 4. Green Day- American Idiot 5. Nirvana - Nevermind 6. Marilyn Manson- The High End of Low 7. Death From Above 1979- You're a Woman, I'm a Machine 8. Pixies - Surfer Rosa 9. From First to Last - Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count 10.Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
