Perhaps the average "church goer" has an overstated notion of the religiosity of the society they live in and are therefore worried about the perception others in regards to their lack of church going.
Or perhaps it's just cognitive dissonance at play. A conflict between their stated notion of being a christian, and the fact that there is little to be stated for how that Christianity is in anyway an actual relevance to their lives. It's the scary notion that they don't actually believe what they think they believe.

Whatever nation you visit you will find that society in general dedicated to one major religious ideal, the majority that is. If you had been born in Afghanistan, for example, would you be a good Muslim. In Thyland a good Buddhist. In Israel a good Jew.. Etc.Etc.Etc. A man actions dictate his true faith and beliefs, not those who use religion as a lever, to play societys song, and those who use believers who are led by the nose and or finatical.
Here USA. There are Christians , dedicated true believers..I am with hope 10% of this true Christian population decide its time to march against genocide, slaughter, torture and march on WDC. That would be at least 10 million folks. The wars would stop! The rats would run back in their holes.

hotair.com/archives/2013/08/29/iowa-democrat-prayer-thank-god-for-abortionists/ THE ARTICLE BELOW PRETTY MUCH SAYS IT ALL when it comes to Americans claiming to be more religious than they are. IMO, God does not hear prayers thanking HIM for abortionists. WE ARE SUCH A SCREWED UP COUNTRY. Iowa Democrat prayer: Thank God for abortionists! Hey, this could be progress. About time last year, the Democratic National Convention booed when the platform committee tried to backtrack and add a mention of God that had been earlier removed. In Iowa, at least Democrats have gone back to openly praying, but perhaps they should be hoping that God isn’t listening: They made the unusual decision, for Democrats, to begin the event with a prayer. This was likely in response to a prayer vigil being conducted by pro-life activists at the same time nearby. Des Moines activist Midge Slater took the podium and spent five and a half minutes thanking God for abortion rights, abortion doctors and taxpayer funding for abortions. She also referred to the decision to have an abortion as “a blessing”.During the entire prayer, State Senator Jack Hatch and Rep. Tyler Olson, both of whom are running for governor, kept their heads bowed and eyes closed, joining in the group prayer. The Iowa Republican transcribed a bit of the prayer, which goes on for quite a while: “We give thanks, oh Lord, for the doctors, both current and future, who provide quality abortion care.”
“We pray for increased financial support for low-income women to access contraception, abortion and childcare.”
“Today, we pray for women in developing nations, that they may know the power of self-determination. May they have access to employment, education, birth control and abortion.”
“Today we pray for the families who have chosen. May they know the blessing of choice.” Here’s my favorite part, very obviously aimed at the pro-life demonstrators:
“We pray for women who have been made afraid by their paternalistic religion.”
